A sip off the old block…
The origins of Maison Viticole Schmit-Fohl date back to 1792, precisely three years after the start of the French Revolution. Unlike France’s monarchy, however, the wine estate, now one of Luxembourg’s oldest, has continued into the 21st century.
Spearheading the effort is eleventh-generation winemaker Nicolas Schmit, who took over from his father, Armand, in 2016.
Despite their history, or perhaps because of it, Schmit-Fohl remains dedicated to a rebellious brand of innovation. In 1986, they were the first to plant Chardonnay in Luxembourg.
Armand, who drives a red Ducati Monster muscle bike, is an unashamed fan of Burgundy and Champagne. His son Nicolas, who prefers to cycle, has embraced sustainability; all 11 hectares have been certified organic starting in 2020.
