A vine of the times…

In a 1996 LA Times article entitled ‘A Wine Region Less Celebrated’, J.D. Brown mentions being joined for lunch by some “some school-age grandchildren” at Domaine Viticole Mme Aly Duhr et fils in Luxembourg. It’s a wonderful read despite (or perhaps because of) its outdated nature. Twenty-four years later, and the estate is now managed by the grandchildren, fifth generation brothers, Ben and Max Duhr.

Founded in 1872 by Mathias Duhr, the estate is located in the wine-growing village of Ahn. Small riverside holdings now total 18 hectares, with the oldest Riesling plot dating back to 1972.

Native grasses and wild herbs grow between the vines, allowing for herbicide-free grape growing. The vines are weeded manually and all grapes are harvested by hand.

Aly Duhr Buildinng

Domaine Mme Aly Duhr et Fils is equally renowned for its trendsetting work in the cellar.

Beginning in 1982, they began to produce carefully selected barrel fermented blends— a first for Luxembourg. More recently, native yeasts have been used in nearly every vintage, making for richer, more expressive wines.

Fun Fact: Aly Duhr sponsors a local cycling team called Muselbikes (Musel is the Luxembourgish word for Moselle)
